Each resident would be wise to post, somewhere handy, a list of items that can be recycled, so they can refer to it prior to pickup day and not just toss the item in to recycling to let someone else work it out. I have heard of some situations where recycling privileges have been taken away because of improper sorting. Some directors have discovered soiled baby diapers, car mufflers, crock pots, baking pans and a broken snow shovel (just to name a few improper items) in the recycling bins. Recycling is another significant problem if it is not separated properly. Some superintendents, who could not tolerate the bad habits any longer, have armed themselves with rubber gloves and facemasks to go through abandoned garbage bags to search for envelopes and such by which to identify the culprits. Plus, there’s the extra unnecessary work that falls on the shoulders of the maintenance staff. Continuous poor garbage disposal habits will not only create unbearable odours, it will attract mice, cockroaches and many other unwanted critters. If they don’t fit, they leave the bag sitting on the floor inside the door, or worse, stuck half in and half out of the chute. And in high-rise buildings some owners try to force too-large bags down the garbage chute. Sometimes the gamble pays off, other times someone else is left with a mess to pick up. I, too, have seen people toss their garbage bags from a distance, hoping they reach the bin. Some residents fail to recognize the importance of following the rules when it comes to garbage disposal. Could you please address this problem? Thanks!Ī You are certainly not alone in this issue: It is a problem in both high-rises and condo townhouses. We never know what is going to be left behind that we have to pick up after the garbage and recycle trucks depart. ![]() Some owners just toss their bags and walk away without caring that the bag broke open. Article content Q We live in a condominium townhouse and our garbage is picked up once a week. Postmedia may earn an affiliate commission from purchases made through links on this page.
